The school aims to provide a wide range of sports and physical activities which will enable pupils to develop skills and competence in these activities, be physically active for sustained periods of time, engage in competitive sports, and lead healthy and active lifestyles. This will be achieved through participation in Physical Education lessons and the opportunity to take part in a range of extra-curricular activities.
All pupils, during their 2 lessons a week, will take part in gymnastics, dance, athletics, swimming (Year 5 pupils only), outdoor adventurous activities and various forms of the three game types: Invasion (eg football, hockey), Net/Wall (eg tennis, badminton) and Striking/Fielding (eg cricket, rounders). To extend the pupils further in outdoor activities, pupils in Years 5 and 6 are given the option of attending residential courses at Malvern Hills Outdoor Education Centre. Inter-house tournaments are run termly in both winter and summer sports, allowing all pupils the opportunity to participate in competitive activities.
The school is provided with good facilities, including an excellent playing field with ample room, a football pitch, rounders pitches, an athletics track and two cricket wickets. The playground is large and marked out with 2 netball courts for winter and 8 tennis courts for summer. We have our own indoor gymnasium, which doubles as the school hall.
The physical education staff are specialists and are supported by well trained and experienced staff. They regularly attend in-service courses to up date and extend their knowledge and ideas, and external coaches regularly visit the school to support the work of teachers. The P.E. Co-ordinator works across the area with other schools to promote being healthy and active.
The school is an active member of the South Worcestershire School Sports Association, which allows entrance to district and county tournaments. We have strong links with other schools in our pyramid, both feeder and parallel, regularly hosting or attending liaison meetings to enable continuity in approach, progression through the system and the exchange of new ideas and methods.
We were particularly proud to receive one of the first School Games Bronze awards in 2012 and we successfully applied for a renewal of this prestigious award at this level this year. This reflects the hard work and enthusiasm of our P.E. staff, and the dedication of so many of our children to sports.
With our commitment to dance activities, the department was also instrumental in assisting the school to achieve Artsmark Gold for the 4th time in 2012.
